Do you remember that milkweed was gathered across the US and used as a kapok substitute in Mae West life jackets during World War II? It was chosen becasue it had similar characteristics to kapok. Its one drawback was it was less water resistantm so did not float as long.

WWII is just prior to my arrival on the Planet, but there are stories about South Dakota kids gathering milkweed pods for just such a use in the 1940s.
